The mechanism

How does an AI assistant build its answer?

Most pages in this market treat AI visibility as a single ranking. It is not. An answer is built in stages, and a business can be lost at any one of them. Knowing which stage you are losing at is the job, because the fix is different at each.

01

The question

A buyer asks in their own words. The engine often rewrites it into several narrower questions before it looks anything up.

Covered by question-led pages
02

Retrieval

The engine pulls candidate pages from an index, or fetches them live. If it cannot reach or read your page, nothing else matters.

Access and indexing
03

Selection

It keeps the passages that answer the question directly and that it can trust. Vague, padded or unsupported pages get dropped here.

Content and credibility
04

Synthesis

It writes one answer from the passages it kept, naming businesses and linking some sources. The wording changes every time.

Won or lost at retrieval and selection

Two of those four stages are ours to work on. One and four belong to the platform, and anyone who says otherwise is selling something. We can change whether your page is reachable at stage two and whether it survives stage three. That is a narrower promise than most AI visibility pitches, and it is the honest one.

Platforms

Which AI platforms matter for a UAE business?

These six are not variations of one product. They source answers differently, are governed by different agents, and cite at different rates. The table is the short version. The paragraphs under it are the parts that change what we do.

The agent or control token that governs each engine. Every one of these is allowed by name in our own robots.txt.
EngineCrawler or control tokenLinks sources
ChatGPTGPTBot training, OAI-SearchBot searchYes, in search answers
Google AI OverviewsGooglebot and the standard snippet controlsYes
GeminiGoogle-Extended, a control token with no crawlerSometimes
PerplexityPerplexityBotYes, numbered
ClaudeClaudeBot, Claude-SearchBot, Claude-UserYes, in web search
Microsoft CopilotbingbotYes

ChatGPT runs two separate paths. One answers from what the model already learned, which has a training cutoff and no live lookup. The other searches the web and cites what it finds. Different agents govern them. Blocking GPTBot keeps your pages out of training data but does not remove you from ChatGPT's search answers; OAI-SearchBot is the one that affects whether you can be surfaced there. Sites block the wrong one often.

Google AI Overviews are part of Search, not a separate product. They draw on the same index and ranking systems as ordinary results, so eligibility follows from being indexed and ranking well. There is no separate AI Overviews index to submit to. The controls that matter are the ordinary snippet controls: nosnippet, max-snippet and data-nosnippet restrict what Google may show, and restricting them can keep you out of an overview.

Google-Extended does not control AI Overviews. This is the most common error we find on competitor pages in this market. Google-Extended is a robots.txt control token for Gemini Apps and Vertex AI grounding. It has no crawler and never appears in an access log. Allowing it is how a site opts in to being a grounded source in Gemini. Disallowing it does nothing to your AI Overviews, and disallowing Googlebot to influence an overview removes you from Google Search altogether.

Perplexity retrieves at answer time, and cites visibly with numbered sources. That makes it the quickest of the six to reflect a change you have just made, and the most sensitive to a page it cannot fetch cleanly. Microsoft Copilot is a Bing story: it answers from the Bing index, so the lever is Bing indexing and Bing Webmaster Tools, not anything Copilot-specific. Businesses that have only ever watched Google Search Console are regularly absent from Bing for reasons they have never seen.

Worked example

What does an AI citation actually look like?

This is our own page used as a source in a Google AI answer for a buyer question in our market. The question asks for the best agency for aesthetic clinics in Dubai. The answer names us, links the page, then quotes specific cost-per-lead ranges for individual treatments. Those figures were on the page, attached to named treatments, in a form that could be checked.

Nothing about this was an AI visibility tactic. It was a page that answered a real buyer question with specific, checkable detail instead of adjectives. That is most of the work, and it is repeatable.

This is AdGrow's own page being cited, not a client result.

The work

What do you change on a website to get cited by AI?

All of this is ordinary, checkable work on your own property. None of it involves submitting your business to a platform, because there is no such submission to make.

01

Crawler and fetch access

That each named agent can reach the pages that matter, and that no robots directive, firewall rule or bot-protection product is quietly refusing them. This is the stage-two problem, and the most common cause of total absence.

02

Answer-shaped pages

The pages buyers ask about, rewritten so the direct answer comes first and the detail follows. A page that opens with positioning gives a retrieval system nothing to lift.

03

Specific, checkable detail

Named services, real ranges, locations, timings, what is included and what is not. Specific detail survives selection, and it makes the answer about you rather than your category.

04

Consistent business facts

Name, address, phone, hours, licence and service list, made to agree across your site, your Google Business Profile and the directories that describe you. Local questions lean on profile data heavily.

05

Structured data

Organization, Service, FAQ and the local types where they apply, written to match what the page says. Structured data does not force a citation. It removes ambiguity about what the page is.

06

Credibility that can be verified

Named people with real roles, registration numbers where a regulator issues them, and third-party profiles that agree with your site. Unverifiable claims are a selection risk, not an asset.

Measurement

How do you measure AI visibility?

There is no rank tracker for AI answers, and anyone presenting one as though it were Search Console is overstating what it can know. What follows is what we actually record, and it is a sampling method rather than a census.

Instrument 01

A fixed question set

Twenty to forty questions in your buyers' own words, agreed before anything changes and then kept fixed. Changing the questions between runs makes the comparison meaningless.

Instrument 02

A fixed cadence

The same set, the same engines, on a set schedule, in a clean session, from the market you sell to. Answers vary by account history and location, so both are held still.

Instrument 03

Crawler access logs

Server-side records of which named agents fetched which URLs and what they received. The only part of this measurement that is a hard fact rather than a sample.

For each question and each engine we record the same fields every time, so two runs can be compared rather than described:

  • Whether your business was named at all
  • Whether a page of yours was linked, and which URL
  • Which competitors appeared in the same answer
  • Whether what was said about you was accurate
  • Whether the engine answered from a source or from training

On the Google side we read Search Console too, with one caveat stated plainly: it folds AI Overview appearances into overall Search totals rather than reporting them as a separate type. So we use it for indexing, coverage and query movement, and we never present a figure as an AI Overview impression count, because that figure is not available to anyone.

Limits

What can an AI visibility agency not promise?

This section exists because most pages in this market quietly skip it. If any of the following is a problem for you, this is the right time to find out rather than three months in.

  • No guaranteed placement, on any platform. Each engine decides what to show. There is no paid slot, no submission queue and no ranking API. Anyone offering a guaranteed position in an AI answer is describing something that does not exist.
  • The same question can give different answers.Phrasing, account history, location and model version all move the result, and answers change between runs with nothing on your side having changed. One screenshot proves an answer happened once. It is not a ranking.
  • We do not publish client results for this service. We have not run it long enough to have results worth showing. Everything here is mechanism, our own citation, or an illustration labelled as one. When we have client outcomes we can stand behind, they will appear here with the account named.
  • Being cited is not the same as being chosen. An engine naming you starts a buyer's research rather than ending it. The page they land on still has to do its job, which is ordinary conversion work and is not solved by this service.
  • Some of it is outside your site entirely.Review volume, third-party coverage and what directories say about you all feed these answers, and none of it is ours to edit. We can identify the gaps worth closing. We cannot write someone else's page.
  • Timelines are uneven and not ours to set.Perplexity can reflect a change within days because it fetches at answer time. A model's trained knowledge may not reflect it until a future training run, which no agency controls or can date.

Scope

What does an AI visibility engagement include?

  • Starting visibility reviewThe agreed questions across the agreed engines, recorded field by field.
  • Access and indexing fixesCrawler reachability, robots directives, snippet controls, and Bing coverage alongside Google.
  • Priority page rewritesThe pages your buyers ask about, rebuilt to answer first and support second.
  • Business information alignmentYour site, your Google Business Profile and the directories that describe you, made to agree.
  • Structured dataWritten to match the page, not to decorate it.
  • Reporting against the fixed setSame questions, same fields, agreed cadence, so movement is visible.

Your proposal defines which pages, which platforms and which ongoing work are included.

Questions

What do UAE businesses ask about AI visibility?

What is AI visibility?

AI visibility is how your business appears when people ask AI tools about services, products or providers. A useful review separates three things: whether you are named, whether a page of yours is linked as a source, and whether what is said about you is accurate. Those move independently, and one combined number hides what is happening.

What is the difference between SEO, GEO and AEO?

SEO helps people find your website through search. GEO and AEO describe work aimed at how your information is used inside generated answers. The overlap is large, because several engines answer from a search index to begin with. The real difference is measurement: search gives you impressions and positions, answer engines give you a sample you have to collect deliberately.

Which platforms do you cover?

ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Microsoft Copilot. The relevant set is agreed rather than assumed, because they do not behave alike and not all matter to every market. Copilot, for instance, is an index question settled in Bing.

Can you guarantee that AI will recommend my business?

No, and no one can. Each platform decides what to show, answers vary by phrasing and context, and there is no paid placement or submission route into an AI answer. We make your pages reachable, specific and consistent, then measure against a fixed question set so you can see whether it moved.

Do I need a new website?

Usually not. We start with the site you have, because the common failures are access, vague pages and inconsistent business facts rather than the platform it is built on. The audit tells you whether clearer pages and better information are enough.
