Cash on Delivery and UAE Ecommerce Ads: Measure Delivered Orders, Not Just Checkouts

Cash on delivery can increase completed checkouts while leaving collected revenue unchanged. For UAE ecommerce ads, track placed, confirmed, delivered and paid orders separately. Use delivery-adjusted acquisition costs alongside platform purchase reporting before increasing the budget.

Why a purchase event can overstate the result

A shopper places a COD order, the store sends a confirmation and the advertising platform records a purchase. Several days later the parcel is refused. The platform report can still look successful even though the business paid for the click, packing and attempted delivery.

Shopify’s manual payment documentation explains that manual-payment orders are unpaid until payment is received and recorded. A COD checkout is therefore an order placed, not proof of collected cash. The marketing report needs to preserve that distinction.

Follow the order through fulfilment

Stage Record What it answers
Placed Order ID, payment method, campaign information Did the advertising create a checkout?
Confirmed Customer confirmation and address checks Is the order ready for dispatch?
Delivered Courier outcome, with failed attempts recorded Did the customer accept the parcel?
Paid and settled Amount collected and courier remittance What revenue did the business actually receive?
Returned Refunds, reverse logistics and reason What value and cost remain after delivery?

Keep the order ID stable across the store, courier export and reconciliation sheet. At a minimum, record order date, emirate, payment method, order value and final outcome. A weekly join by order ID is better than a sophisticated dashboard that cannot distinguish a refused parcel.

Calculate delivery-adjusted acquisition cost

Here is a hypothetical example. A campaign spends AED 3,000 and produces 100 COD orders worth AED 200 each. Ads Manager reports AED 20,000 order value and 6.67x ROAS. If only 70 orders are delivered and paid, collected revenue is AED 14,000, giving 4.67x revenue-to-ad-spend before later refunds.

Placed-order CPA is AED 30. Paid-delivered-order CPA is about AED 42.86. Neither figure includes product, fulfilment, payment collection, failed delivery, agency or creative costs. Add those before deciding whether the campaign is profitable.

For COD-heavy stores, a revenue-to-spend ratio based on matured delivered orders is a useful business view. Keep it labelled separately from platform-attributed ROAS. They describe different stages of the customer journey.

Improve confirmation without creating friction everywhere

Look at the failure reasons first. Wrong phone numbers, unclear delivery windows and unexpected COD charges need different fixes. Show the payment terms and service area before checkout, and confirm the address in a way the customer can easily understand.

A lightweight confirmation message can ask the customer to verify the order and delivery location. Obtain the permissions needed for the channel you use. Give staff a clear rule for dispatching unconfirmed orders, based on actual delivery performance and courier terms.

Review patterns by campaign and product. A misleading demonstration can attract people who refuse the product when it arrives. A delivery-time mismatch may affect a particular emirate. Fix the source of failure rather than assuming every COD buyer has low intent.

Keep purchase tracking consistent

Do not suddenly move your main purchase event from checkout to courier settlement without examining the integration and reporting impact. That changes the meaning and timing of the event and may affect campaign learning. Document the current definition before making a change.

Where your integration supports an appropriate downstream business event, test it with the technical team. Keep identifiers and values consistent and prevent duplicate counting. Your finance reconciliation should still exist independently of any platform upload.

Read recent orders with a delivery lag

An order placed yesterday may still be in transit. Comparing its incomplete delivery rate with last month’s fully matured orders makes the new campaign look worse. Choose a cohort age based on your actual fulfilment cycle and show pending orders separately.

A practical weekly report shows spend and placed orders immediately, then updates confirmed, delivered and paid outcomes as the cohort matures. Compare prepaid and COD orders, but include any differences in customer mix and fees.

What should you fix first?

If the delivered-order margin is healthy, improve successful delivery and repeat purchase before adding complexity. If the margin is negative, review price, product claims, delivery terms and campaign economics. Higher checkout volume can make the problem larger.

Frequently asked questions

Should a UAE store stop offering cash on delivery?

Decide from delivered-order contribution, customer demand and operational capacity. COD can be useful when acceptance and collection costs are understood.

Does a Shopify COD order mean payment was collected?

No. COD is a manual payment method. Confirm collection and update the payment status through your fulfilment and reconciliation process.

Why is my COD ROAS high but cash flow weak?

The platform may count placed orders that remain unpaid, fail delivery or are returned. Reconcile attributed order value with matured paid-delivered revenue.
