Meta Ads vs Google Ads for a UAE Store: Which One First?

Start with Google if people already search for what you sell, because Shopping and brand Search catch demand that exists today. Start with Meta if nobody is searching yet, because you have to create the demand first. Most UAE stores run both eventually, but running both on a small budget is the most common and most expensive mistake we see.

The short version

  • Google catches demand. Meta creates it. They are not competing for the same job.
  • Below AED 10,000 a month, pick one. Two starved channels learn slower than one fed one.
  • Google will almost always report the higher ROAS. That does not make it the better channel.
  • Add the second channel with new budget, not by splitting the first one.

This is the question we get on nearly every first call. It usually arrives as “which one works better in Dubai?”, which is the wrong question, and it produces the wrong answer.

Neither works better. They do different jobs. Picking correctly is mostly about one thing: whether anyone is typing your product into Google today.

The one test that decides it

Open Google and search the way a customer would. Not your brand name. The problem or the product.

“Epoxy resin dubai”. “Laser hair removal jumeirah”. “Modest swimwear uae”.

If you see a full page of shopping results, competitor ads and comparison content, demand exists. Google will be cheaper and faster for you, because you are stepping in front of people who already decided they want the thing.

If the results are thin, irrelevant, or mostly international sites that do not ship here, demand does not exist yet in a searchable form. Meta has to go and make it.

What each channel is actually good at

Google Meta
The job it does Catches existing demand Creates new demand
Typical UAE cost per click AED 3 to AED 12 on Search, AED 1.50 to AED 5 on Shopping AED 1.50 to AED 4
Time to first signal Days Two to four weeks
What it needs from you A clean product feed and a decent landing page A steady flow of new creative
Where it fails Nothing to catch if nobody searches Burns out fast in a small market
Reported ROAS Usually higher, partly because of brand Search Usually lower, doing the harder job

Why Google’s ROAS looks better than it is

Here is the trap. You run both, Google reports 6x, Meta reports 2.4x, and the obvious conclusion is to move the money.

Before you do, check what share of Google’s conversions came from people searching your brand name. On accounts we take over, brand Search is often a third or more of reported Google conversions. Those customers were already coming. Google is taking credit for a door they were already walking through.

Meanwhile Meta is the reason some of them knew the brand existed. This is the same measurement problem we wrote about in why Shopify and Ads Manager never match, and it is why we manage against blended ROAS rather than either platform’s own figure.

Keep running brand Search. It is cheap and it stops competitors from bidding on your name. Just stop crediting it with growth it did not create.

What the two look like on real accounts

On a UAE craft supplies store, Google carries the account. Roughly AED 18,000 to AED 20,000 a month, a 4x to 5x return held for over two years. The most recent 90 days: AED 213,502 in conversion value on AED 39,372 in spend.

On a fashion brand, the pattern was different. We inherited a Meta account running awareness campaigns only and rebuilt it into conversion campaigns at 5,000 to 7,000 dollars a month. Google, rebuilt from scratch for the same brand, hit 11.75x in its best 60 day window.

Same operator, same method, two completely different channel splits, because the two businesses had different demand curves.

How to sequence it properly

Months 1 to 3, one channel only. Whichever the search test pointed at. Get it above your break-even and keep it there for a month.

Month 4, add the second with new money. Not by halving the first. If the business cannot fund new money yet, it is not time. The budget ladder is here if you need a reference point.

Month 6 onwards, judge them as a system. Total store revenue against total ad spend. If blended is improving while one platform’s reported ROAS falls, that is usually a sign the channels are working together, not against each other.

The mistake that costs the most

Splitting AED 8,000 across Meta and Google because it feels safer than committing.

Both campaigns sit in the learning phase for months, neither gathers enough conversions to optimise, and after a quarter you conclude that paid ads do not work for your business. We have picked up several accounts where that is exactly what happened, and the fix was to switch one off.

Frequently asked questions

Should a new UAE store start with Meta or Google?

If people already search for what you sell, start with Google. Shopping and brand Search catch demand that exists today and prove the offer fastest. If nobody is searching, start with Meta, because you have to create the demand before anyone can search for it.

Can I run both on AED 10,000 a month?

You can, but we would not. At AED 10,000 you get two half-fed campaigns that both take twice as long to learn. Pick one, get it profitable, then add the second with new money rather than by splitting the old budget.

Which channel gives a better ROAS in the UAE?

Google usually reports a higher ROAS, because a lot of it is brand Search and Shopping catching people who had already decided. Meta usually reports lower but is doing the harder job of creating demand. Comparing their reported numbers head to head is the wrong comparison.

Do I need a big creative budget for Meta in the UAE?

You need a steady one, not a big one. UAE audiences are small enough that creative fatigues quickly. Three to five new concepts a month beats one expensive production a quarter, every time.

When should I add the second channel?

When the first one is profitable at your break-even, has been for a month, and you are hitting a ceiling you cannot spend past without the return falling. That is the signal that you have run out of the cheap demand on that platform.
