In most cases ChatGPT is not showing your products because the shopping carousel it would show them in is live for users in the United States only, and because Shopify will not put a store into the ChatGPT channel unless that store sells to US customers. Both facts come from the vendors. Neither is written on any UAE agency page we could find.
The short version
- OpenAI says shopping in ChatGPT is currently live for ChatGPT users in the U.S., with more regions planned and no date given.
- To sell on ChatGPT through Shopify, Shopify requires your store to sell to customers in the United States. The store itself can be based anywhere.
- There are no fees. Shopify states there is no charge for selling in ChatGPT beyond your normal payment processing.
- Product results are not ads. You cannot buy a place in them.
- Your products can still be named in an ordinary ChatGPT answer, built from a live web search, with no feed and no US gate. That is a different surface and it is the one most UAE stores should be working on.
We wrote this because of a pattern in sales calls. A store owner in Dubai or Riyadh opens ChatGPT, asks it to find a product they sell, watches it recommend three competitors, and arrives convinced they need a product feed. Sometimes they have already paid someone for one.
Usually the feed is not the problem, and sometimes the feed is not even available to them. So here is what the platforms actually say, with the links, so you can check every line of this yourself.
Why is ChatGPT not showing my products?
There are two separate surfaces and they fail for different reasons. The shopping carousel, with images and prices and a merchant list, is a US-user feature today. Ordinary answers that name a product and a seller are built from a live web search, and those fail when a crawler cannot read your pages or your details disagree across the web.
Almost everything written about this problem treats the two as one thing. They are not, and the fix is different for each. Work out which one you are actually missing from before you spend anything.
Route 1 is available to you today. Routes 2 and 3 are gated. Most money spent on this problem is spent on the two gated routes.
Is ChatGPT Shopping even available to my customers?
If your customers are in the UAE or Saudi Arabia, probably not yet. OpenAI’s own merchant page states that shopping in ChatGPT is currently live for users in the U.S., and that it plans to expand to more merchants and regions over time. No date is published, so nobody can tell you when.
This matters more than any technical fix. If the carousel does not render for a shopper in Dubai, then a perfect product feed changes nothing for that shopper. It may still be worth preparing for, but it is preparation and should be priced and described as preparation.
Be careful with the wording when you read other pages on this. A page can say “ChatGPT Shopping is live” and be telling the truth about the US while leaving you to assume it covers your market.
My store is on Shopify. Am I already in?
Only if you sell to customers in the United States. OpenAI’s help centre says Shopify merchants are already integrated through Shopify Catalog and that no additional work is required. Shopify’s own documentation adds the condition OpenAI leaves out: your store must sell to customers in the United States.
Read those two pages together and the confusion in every forum thread on this makes sense. OpenAI tells a Shopify merchant they are in. Shopify tells them there is an eligibility gate. For a Dubai store that ships to the US, both are true and you are likely eligible. For a Dubai store selling only inside the GCC, you are not in the ChatGPT channel today.
You can see your own status rather than guess. In your Shopify admin, go to Sales channels, then Agentic. If your store is not eligible, Shopify prints the reason there.
What does Shopify check before my products can appear?
Four things for the channel, and a longer list for Shopify Catalog itself. The channel needs US selling, Catalog-eligible products, agreement to the Agentic Storefronts supplemental terms, and completed Terms of service, Privacy policy and Return and refund policy pages in your settings.
The Shopify Catalog requirements are where most stores actually fail, and they are the part you can fix this week:
- Store on the Starter plan or higher, and not password protected.
- Every product needs a title and at least one image.
- Price greater than zero. Free products are excluded.
- Products published to your online store, with an identifiable product URL.
- Products not set to Unlisted, and not hidden from search engines.
- No disallowed categories, and no sensitive content.
- B2B-only stores are not supported.
Shopify also weighs account standing: verified email, two-step authentication, identity and business verification, a record of genuine fulfilled orders, a low chargeback rate, and invoices paid on time. It says eligibility is reviewed over time, so a store can gain or lose it.
That list is unglamorous and it is the real work. We have seen more UAE stores blocked by a handful of zero-price sample products and a theme setting hiding items from search engines than by anything to do with AI.
I am on WooCommerce, Salla or Zid. What do I do instead?
You apply to OpenAI directly and you join a waitlist. OpenAI’s merchant page says merchants can apply to share product data, and that if you have already applied you are on the waitlist. A self-serve merchant platform is described as coming later. Submitting the form is not access.
There is no published Salla or Zid integration with ChatGPT shopping at the time of writing, which matters for Saudi stores in particular. If someone offers to connect your Salla store to ChatGPT Shopping, ask them which vendor documentation they are working from.
So for a non-Shopify store the honest sequence is: fix route 1 now, apply for route 3 and expect to wait, and do not pay anyone for route 2.
What does OpenAI’s product feed actually ask for?
Nine required fields on every row, and a short list of recommended ones. It is a smaller specification than most people expect, and nothing in it is exotic. If you already run a clean Google Merchant Center feed you have almost all of it.
| Field | What it has to be |
|---|---|
item_id |
A stable ID, unique per item or variant in your feed |
title |
Product name, including the variant when that matters |
description |
A factual description of this item |
url |
The product page, with the variant selected where possible |
brand |
The brand as shown on the product page |
seller_name |
The name of the seller supplying the offer |
image_url |
Main image, showing this variant |
availability |
One of in_stock, out_of_stock, pre_order, backorder, unknown |
price |
Regular price in major units, written like 79.99 AED |
Recommended on top of that: condition, sale price, extra image URLs, review count and star rating. There are also eligibility flags in the specification, and it is worth knowing that search eligibility defaults to on while ads eligibility defaults to off. The feed specification is short enough to read in full before you commission anything.
One practical note for UAE sellers. OpenAI asks you to update availability when an item sells out and to update the feed when a sale starts or ends. It does not publish a refresh interval. A feed that goes stale is worse than no feed, because wrong stock and wrong prices are the fastest way to lose a buyer who did find you.
Can I pay to appear in ChatGPT Shopping?
Not in the product results. OpenAI states plainly that product results are selected independently by ChatGPT, are not ads, and are not influenced by any OpenAI partnerships. Ads in ChatGPT exist, but they are a separate surface from the product carousel and they do not buy you a place in it.
The feed specification reflects this with separate eligibility flags, and the ads flag is off unless it is configured. So if a proposal promises placement in ChatGPT shopping results for a monthly fee, the vendor’s own documentation contradicts it.
Is this the same thing as Google Shopping?
No, but the groundwork overlaps almost entirely. Google Shopping is a bid-based paid placement with a managed feed. ChatGPT product results are unpaid and there is nothing to bid on. What they share is the product data, so a clean, accurate, complete catalogue serves both at once.
That overlap is the practical argument for doing this work now rather than waiting for the region to open. If you already run Google Shopping campaigns in the UAE, you are starting from a better position than a store that has never built a feed, and the clean-up pays for itself in the paid channel regardless of what AI does next.
Why does ChatGPT name the product but not my store?
Because product knowledge and seller knowledge are different things to an AI engine. It can describe a product confidently from general knowledge while having no reliable source saying that you stock it, in this market, at this price, right now. That second half is almost always the gap.
There is also a structural factor worth knowing. OpenAI says merchants are ranked on factors including availability, price, quality, and whether they are the maker or primary seller of the item. If you resell an international brand, you are competing against the brand itself and every other reseller. If you are the maker, which describes a lot of UAE perfume houses, own-label skincare brands and local fashion labels, that line is working in your favour.
We go into the seller half of this in more detail on AI visibility for UAE e-commerce stores.
Can people buy from my store inside ChatGPT?
On Shopify, no. Shopify describes the ChatGPT channel as discovery-focused: shoppers complete the purchase on your own checkout, in a ChatGPT in-app browser or a new tab. There is no ChatGPT direct-checkout setting in the Shopify admin, because there is nothing to switch on.
In-channel checkout does exist, but for other surfaces. Shopify lists direct checkout for Google AI Mode and Gemini, Microsoft Copilot, and Meta surfaces. The practical upside of the ChatGPT arrangement is that your own checkout, branding and payment methods are the ones in use, which in this region matters because local payment habits rarely survive a generic checkout.
You may also see the Agentic Commerce Protocol mentioned. OpenAI describes it as supporting product discovery today, with the full shopping journey coming over time. The deeper checkout and payment specifications are aimed at payment providers and large merchants with their own card vaults, not at a normal store.
What should a UAE store do this week?
Work on the route that is open to you. Make sure OpenAI’s search crawler can read your product pages, then make those pages state plainly what the thing is, that you sell it, where you deliver, what it costs and whether it is in stock. That is route 1, and no region gate applies to it.
In order:
- Check that
OAI-SearchBotis allowed in your robots.txt. It is a separate token fromGPTBot, which is about model training. You can decide those two independently. - Open a product page with JavaScript disabled. If the price, stock and description vanish, so do they for a crawler.
- Fix the Shopify Catalog basics even if you are not eligible for the channel yet: images on every product, no zero-price items, nothing hidden from search engines, policies completed.
- Make delivery and returns specific to where you actually ship. “Fast UAE delivery” tells an engine nothing it can repeat.
- Get your own details consistent across your site, your Google Business Profile and any marketplace you sell on. Contradictions between your own sources are the cheapest thing to fix and the most expensive to leave.
Then, if you sell to the US or plan to, look at eligibility properly. And if you are on WooCommerce, Salla or Zid, submit the OpenAI application and treat it as a queue, not a plan.
How do I check what ChatGPT says about my products today?
Ask it the way a customer would, several times, and write down what comes back. Use the phrasing a buyer uses rather than your category language, run each question more than once because answers vary, and record which stores get named and which pages are cited rather than just whether you appear.
Two things to keep in mind while you do it. Your own chat history and memory can shape what you see, so a fresh session gives a cleaner read. And a single good answer is not a position, because the same question asked again can drop you. Treat it as a sample, not a ranking.
We run this check as a fixed set of shopping questions, recorded with the date, the platform and the sources cited, so you can see what is actually being said about your products rather than a score. We do not promise placement in ChatGPT shopping results, because the vendors do not offer it.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a product feed to appear in ChatGPT at all?
No. Products and sellers can be named in ordinary ChatGPT answers built from a live web search, with no feed involved. A feed affects the shopping carousel and the accuracy of what is shown there. For a UAE-only store today, the crawlable product page is the higher-value asset.
Does submitting the OpenAI feed application get my products in?
No. OpenAI says that merchants who have applied are on the waitlist, and that a self-serve merchant platform is still being built. Treat the application as joining a queue with no published timeline, and do not let anyone bill it as an integration.
Will blocking GPTBot remove my products from ChatGPT?
No. GPTBot is about content used for model training. Search surfacing uses OAI-SearchBot, a separate token. You can block training and still be found, provided OAI-SearchBot is allowed to read your product pages.
Can I control how ChatGPT describes my product?
Not fully. OpenAI says it may generate simplified titles and descriptions, and that labels such as Budget-friendly or Most popular are model-generated and are not guarantees or verified statements. You control the source data, not the wording that appears.
If I turn off Shopify Catalog access, do my products disappear from ChatGPT?
Not entirely. Shopify says the change can take up to seven days, and that products might still be referenced through other discovery methods such as web crawling and indexing. You also cannot opt out of Shopify Catalog itself, only a channel’s access to it.
Is any of this worth doing before the region opens?
The product-data clean-up is, because it serves Google Shopping and ordinary AI answers at the same time. Building a dedicated OpenAI feed for a UAE-only store is harder to justify today. We would rather tell you that than sell you the feed.
