You cannot rank number one on ChatGPT, because ChatGPT has no ranking positions. What you can change is how often it names your business. That comes from three things: letting its search crawler read your site, publishing pages that answer buyer questions in plain words, and being described the same way on sources outside your own website.
The short version
- ChatGPT answers are not stable. Ask the same question 100 times and the list of brands changes almost every time.
- Allow
OAI-SearchBot. That is the crawler which lets ChatGPT surface your pages in search.GPTBotis a separate decision about model training. - ChatGPT no longer reads from Bing alone, so “submit your sitemap to Bing” is a starting step and not a strategy.
- The UAE is the first country where more than 70% of working-age people use a generative AI tool, so these answers reach your buyers earlier here than in most markets.
Can you rank number one on ChatGPT?
No, and it helps to understand why before you spend money on it. ChatGPT does not hold a list of websites in order. It assembles an answer each time someone asks, and the answer is different on each run.
SparkToro and Gumshoe.ai tested this properly. They had 600 volunteers run 12 prompts through ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI a combined 2,961 times. Their finding: if you ask one of these tools for brand recommendations 100 times, there is less than a 1 in 100 chance of getting the same list twice. Getting the same list in the same order is closer to 1 in 1,000.
So anyone selling you a ChatGPT ranking is selling something that does not exist. Screenshots of a single good answer prove nothing either, because the next run can drop you.
The same research found the part that does hold steady. In each category, the leading brands showed up in 55% to 77% of responses no matter how the question was worded. There is a stable group of businesses the model keeps pulling from. Your job is to join that group, and then to track how often you appear.
Where does ChatGPT get its answers from?
Most UAE agency guides still say ChatGPT runs on Bing, so get into Bing and you are done. That was close enough two years ago. It is now out of date, and acting on it leaves gaps.
ChatGPT today pulls from a mix of places: an index OpenAI built with its own crawler, search results from outside providers, and licensed partners for things like local listings and reviews. OpenAI has never published how much comes from each. The split also changes by query type.
The step you can influence is the middle one. You cannot edit the answer, you can only change what is available to build it from.
What this means in practice is simple. Keep doing the Bing basics, because they still feed part of the picture. Then treat your own site and your outside listings as the other two legs, because a site that is invisible to OpenAI’s crawler cannot be rescued by a Bing submission.
Can you pay ChatGPT to recommend your business?
No. There is no placement to buy inside an answer. Advertising that appears in ChatGPT sits around the response, and it does not change which businesses the answer names.
Worth saying plainly, because this is where UAE buyers get taken advantage of right now: if an agency guarantees you a spot in ChatGPT answers, or quotes a fixed position, they are describing something that cannot be delivered. We wrote a separate piece on how to compare AI visibility proposals in Dubai for anyone sitting with quotes right now.
Which crawler do you need to allow?
This is the one technical step that blocks everything else, and it takes ten minutes. OpenAI runs several bots and they do different jobs. Allowing or blocking the wrong one is common.
| User agent | What it does | What we suggest |
|---|---|---|
OAI-SearchBot |
Surfaces websites in ChatGPT’s search features | Allow. This is the one that decides whether you can appear at all. |
GPTBot |
Crawls content that may be used to train foundation models | Your call. Blocking it does not remove you from ChatGPT search. |
ChatGPT-User |
Fetches a page when a user or a custom GPT asks for it | Allow. OpenAI notes robots.txt rules may not apply to user-led actions. |
OAI-AdsBot |
Checks the safety of pages submitted as ads | Allow if you plan to advertise on ChatGPT. |
Definitions are from OpenAI’s own crawler documentation, which also notes it can take around 24 hours for a robots.txt change to register. Check there before you edit anything. These tokens change, and blog lists go stale. Ours included.
People open robots.txt, see that nothing is blocked, and stop. The block is usually one layer up. Bot filtering at Cloudflare or at the hosting firewall can return a 403 to anything that does not look like a normal browser, and OpenAI’s crawler gets caught in that net while robots.txt sits there looking perfect. Test the live URL using the crawler’s user agent string, not just your browser, and check the firewall rules as well as the file.
Why does ChatGPT keep naming the same competitors?
Because those businesses are described clearly in more than one place, and you are not. The model is not judging who is better. It is assembling whoever it can describe with confidence.
Three gaps cause this more than anything else. Your facts live only on your own website, so there is nothing to confirm them. Your details disagree between your site, your Google Business Profile and the directories you are listed in, so nothing can be stated safely. Or the specific question a buyer asks, such as price range or whether you treat a condition, is answered nowhere on your site. We went through the full diagnosis in why ChatGPT mentions your competitors but not your business.
How should a page be written so ChatGPT can use it?
Write for a reader who is in a hurry, and the machine side mostly takes care of itself. The specific habits that help:
- One real question per page. Not one keyword. The question a customer would type or speak.
- Answer it in the first 40 to 60 words, directly under the heading, before any background. That block is what gets lifted.
- Keep your business name in the same paragraph as the fact. A figure with no name attached gets used without crediting you.
- Give numbers a source. Your own data, or a named third party you link to. Unattributed percentages are the main reason a page gets passed over.
- Put the important content in plain HTML. Prices, services and FAQs that only appear after JavaScript runs may not be read.
- Name the author and show the date. Fresher pages are picked more often, and an unnamed page is harder to trust.
None of this is new writing advice. It is the same thing good service pages have always done, which is why the sites that already answer questions properly are the ones doing well in AI answers without changing much.
Which sources outside your website matter in the UAE?
Globally, the most cited domains in AI answers are community and reference sites such as Reddit and Wikipedia, according to Ahrefs’ analysis of 17 million citations. That is useful background, and it is also where a lot of UAE advice goes wrong, because people read it and go and start a Reddit account.
For a Dubai clinic, a UAE e-commerce brand or a local service business, the sources that carry weight look different:
- A complete and accurate Google Business Profile, with categories and services filled in
- Genuine reviews, and enough of them that the picture is consistent
- Regional press and sector publications that cover the UAE market
- Established local directories for your industry, with identical details on each
- Third party shortlists and comparison articles that name real businesses
- An active LinkedIn presence for the company and the people in it
The common thread is agreement. Every one of these should state your name, location, services and contact details in the same form. Where they disagree, the model has no safe version to repeat, so it reaches for a competitor it can describe cleanly instead.
Does Arabic content change anything?
Yes, and this is the part almost no guide written outside the region covers. Your buyers here ask in both languages, often switching mid conversation. Answers get assembled from what exists in the language of the question.
If your services, locations and prices are only described in English, an Arabic question about your category gets built from whoever has published in Arabic. That is frequently a competitor, a directory, or an old listing with details you changed two years ago. You are not being judged and rejected. You are not available.
You do not need to translate your whole site to fix this. Start with the pages that answer buying questions, and make sure the business facts on them exist in Arabic somewhere a crawler can read.
How do you measure something that changes every time?
You measure how often you appear across many runs, and you never judge on one. The method we use is plain enough to run yourself:
- Write a fixed set of 15 to 30 questions a real customer would ask. Use buying questions, the kind someone types before they know who you are. Something like “best dermatology clinic in Jumeirah”.
- Run each one five to ten times, in a signed out or temporary session so earlier chats do not steer the answer.
- Record two things per run: whether you were named, and which sources were cited.
- Turn that into a share of answers figure per question. Twenty per cent now and forty per cent in three months is real movement.
- Repeat on the same schedule with the same prompts. Changing the prompts resets your baseline.
The cited sources column is the useful half, and most people skip it. It tells you exactly which pages the model trusts for your category, which is the list of places worth being on. There is a fuller walkthrough in our guide to checking whether AI recommends your business.
What should a UAE business do in the first 30 days?
In order, because the order matters. Most of the effort is in the first two weeks.
| Week | What to do | Why it comes here |
|---|---|---|
| Week 1 | Check crawler access at robots.txt and at the firewall. Fix your Google Business Profile. Make your name, address and services identical everywhere. | Nothing else works until the model can read you and your details agree. |
| Week 2 | Build the prompt set and run the first measurement. Record who does get named. | Gives you a baseline and a list of the competitors already inside the answer. |
| Week 3 | Rewrite your main service pages to answer one question each, answer-first, with your name beside the facts. | These are the pages a buying question lands on. |
| Week 4 | Work on outside sources: reviews, regional listings, sector directories, Arabic coverage of your core facts. | Confirmation from elsewhere is what moves you into the consideration set. |
Give it time after that. Changes do not appear the same week, and because answers vary run to run you need several measurement rounds before a trend means anything.
Why does this matter more in the UAE than elsewhere?
Because adoption here is ahead of almost everywhere. Microsoft’s AI Diffusion Report put the UAE first in the world, and the first economy to pass 70% of working-age people using a generative AI tool, against a global average well under 20%.
So the shift that overseas marketers are still describing as something coming soon has already happened to your customers. A Dubai buyer shortlisting a clinic, a contractor or a store is more likely to have asked an AI tool first than a buyer in most other markets. Being absent from that answer costs you here before it costs anyone else.
Want to know where you stand right now? We run a free AI visibility check: a fixed prompt set for your category, run across ChatGPT and the other engines, showing how often you are named and which sources are being cited instead of you. We do not promise positions, because none exist.

Frequently asked questions
Can I pay to appear in ChatGPT answers?
No. There is no paid placement inside the answer itself. Advertising on ChatGPT appears around the response and does not change which businesses get named. Treat any guarantee of a position as a warning sign.
If I block GPTBot, do I disappear from ChatGPT?
No. GPTBot collects content that may train future models. Search surfacing is handled by OAI-SearchBot, which is a separate token. You can block training and still be found, as long as OAI-SearchBot is allowed.
How long before a business shows up in ChatGPT answers?
Crawler access changes can register within about a day. Being named in answers takes longer, usually a few months, because it depends on outside sources agreeing about you. Anyone promising results in weeks is guessing.
Do I need Arabic content to be visible in the UAE?
You need your core business facts to exist in Arabic if your customers ask in Arabic. Answers are built from sources in the language of the question. A full site translation is not required to start, but your main service pages are.
